As of May 15, 2016 the NRA Basic Pistol course has been changed. The 8 hour classroom course where you are given a packet, and sit with an Instructor to run through a program, with a live fire portion had been discontinued. The new version of the Basic Pistol class is a blended online version where you do online modules and take tests, you can print the handbook and have online access to it. When you complete the online modules you will be referred to an local instructor to review firearm safety and complete the live fire portion of the course. The First Shots Program is no longer offered.
We have run the Tactical Pen course twice so far and had great feedback and high enthusiasm for the course content and execution. The curriculum is based on what is taught to the Military and special forces who are going in country without any weapons incognito. It is a great option for those of us who cannot carry a firearm, or a blade to work, you can always have a pen, and after this course you should carry multiple pens!
The participants of these classes where very excited to see what they can do with a pen, and how they could defend themselves in the various scenarios we put them in to test out the validity of the curriculum. You learn the targeting chain, then scenarios, and of course we have a q&a session.
Come check out a class, if you have a large group we may be able to travel to your facility to give the class. Facility needs to be big enough to work in, this is a very hands on class.
Hope to see you in the future, if you have any questions feel free to email me!
We are getting ready to roll out some new stuff for 2014, I have the Tactical Pen program written and approved and once we run through it a few more times I will post dates for training. I believe this is a valuable program there are many places where you cannot have a firearm or knife, but can carry a pen or two. You will learn how to defend yourself with a pen.
I am now a ASHI Training Center and can teach CPR,AED, and BLS to anyone who would like to hold the certifications. I will be blending the training with the Range Safety Officer course for those who would like to have the certs. I feel it is a great idea to have BLS and CPR at least when working as a RSO, you may be the first line of help and may be the difference between life and death to someone who has an issue while on the line.
Stay tuned, schedule will be up soon!
We hosted the First Shots Program at The Harwinton Rod and Gun Club Saturday April 27th. We had great weather and a good turnout. All the participants learned how to safely shoot .22 cal rifles from a benchrest under the direct supervision of Range Safety Officers. The youngest shooter we had was 6 and the oldest was over 60. We went through over 3000 rounds of ammunition during 4 courses of fire, had a great lunch made available from the hard work of the volunteers in the kitchen at Harwinton Rod and Gun Club, and everyone expressed anticipation in attending the next one! If you couldn't make it this time look for the next date listed on our site or better yet sign up for our mailing list!!
WIth the current state of the firearm industry I am sad to say I will have to raise the prices of my classes. Begining April 1,2013 there will be a price adjustment to most of my classes. It is getting hard to get ammuntion and reloading supplies to use for the classes. When I can buy it, it is at a higher cost then what I was able to purchase it in the past and not in the bulk amounts that were available. I am commited to giving the very best training to my students to build a proper foundation of shooting fundamentals to grow upon and pass along to future generations. I take my teaching serious and always have the view that you are paying me to teach you a skill and I will make sure you know what you are doing when you leave.
With the recent termoil in the firearm industry I have made the decision that I may have to use all 22 cal firearms for my classes. I am trying to keep the multi caliber thing going, but its getting harder to find ammo to use for the classes, it is hard to find 22 ammo as well. So with this potental shift in mind I set out to find a full size semi auto in .22 cal that would be something reliable and easy to use for classes. I looked around a little and settled on this model. I have to hit the range with it and I wll update the blog with my findings and thoughts on this new addition.
It is with deep sadness I write this post. As a NRA instructor, and a parent of 2 young children I offer my deepest condolences to the familys who were touched by this horrific event. As an instructor I often times get approched by anti gun people and engage in discussions in regards to firearm banning and restrictions. I am a normal person who enjoys shooting sports, and training the public in the skills and attitude necessary to engage in such activities. I often get people who are anti gun who do not understand what shooting sports are all about. They do not know the fun, mental and physical challange involved to become a good marksman, and often times when they do come out to an event I host they see the lighter side of a properly held event, under supervision and enjoy themselves. Often times people see event like this sensless act of cowardace undertaken by an obviously insane individual and not only push for gun banning and legislation, but often times throw all of us law abiding, responsible firearm owners into the catagory of this madman. I do not belive that banning firearms would be the proper course of action. The person who did this used firearm that were stolen, they were his mothers properly registered and aquired firearms, as is often the case. This person was derranged and would have killed people using any means necessary, it could have been a car or a baseball bat. A recent event involved a bow and arrow. The terrriorists on 9/11 used boxcutters to take over planes killing thousands of people.
I do not know the answer to what we should do, I beleive that responsible, trained people should not have to pay the price of a few disterbed persons. Calling for disarmament of the general populance will allow the criminals who obtain firearms illeagley to run rampid and target all of us in societly knowing that we cannot defend oursleves. The police are only miniutes away when seconds count. The firearm was a tool that he selected, it could of been anything, but a firearm is an easy selection to choose. Again, I am deeply saddened by this event, and have a few friends who had children who were in the school. Some of them made it home that day, others did not.
I hope that the powers to be take a miniute and dont come to a knee jerk reation and take some time to consider all aspects of society and if they choose to make new laws think about it and come to a reasonable soll
